Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association
Minutes - April 10th, 2014
17 members attended the meeting which began at 7:07pm.
Chris Venna, high school principal reported the following:
- 60 students took the Alumni Scholarship exam on March 31st.
- Tickets for the Alumni banquet were distributed to the students who took the exam. Any student/parents who want to attend the banquet are to contact him for purchasing tickets. Several already have made contact with Chris.
- High School Awards ceremony will be Wednesday June 4th at 6:30pm. Graduation will be June 6th at 6:30pm.
Secretary’s Report:
Minutes from the meeting on January 16th, 2014 are available on the web. Motion to accept by John Klinger ’68 and Irvin Liachowitz ’42.
Treasurer’s Report:
Bill Korbich ’54 stated that to date there were 80 responses to the ’14 newsletter and 20 tickets for the banquet were sold.
H. Robert Mattis Esq. ’68 reported the Richard/Mildred Sharp Estate (Mildred was from the class of 1931) is being estimated to provide 3 to 4 thousand dollars a years, starting next year. The Miriam Birchard Estate (class of 1941) monies will come in later this year, details TBD. Will have a better financial picture of amounts for both items by April 2014.
Communications:
A letter was received from Bob Wehr ’54 with some suggestions for the future newsletter creation that the group took into consideration. His letter also encouraged scholarship winners to participate.
Committee Reports:
Auditing: Bill Korbich ’54 stated that when the books are returned from Mr. Sobotor, he will then contact Susan Kropinski Haas ’75 to ask Jacob Schneider from Middletown (who did the audit of the books for 2012) if he will perform a 2013 audit.
Awards: One new award will be given this year from the CQ McWilliams Trust. The criteria for the "C.Q. McWilliams II Memorial Scholarship" is being developed. Once available, they will be posted on the web along with the other awards.
Banquet: Everything is ready and the committee should report to Masser’s Restaurant at 8:45 the morning of May 24th if they would like to have breakfast with the group. Estimated start time is 9:45am to go to Masser’s Banquet Hall to set-up for the banquet that night.
By-laws: Nothing to report.
Class Representatives: We will need a new class representative for ’62. High School Principal - ChrisVenna - will forward two new representatives for the class of 2014 to Jeffrey Clutcher’78.
Bruce Clutcher ’72 volunteered to write a letter to the class representatives urging them, and their fellow classmates, to participate in the Alumni meetings, paying dues each year and perhaps donating each year as a class by using the class year and adding $100 to the total as an annual contribution. As an example, the class of 1956 sends in $156 each year ($100 + $56).
Educational Fund: Each scholarship given by SAHS Alumni will increased this year by $200. The 7 scholarships from Shamokin will be $1,100, $1,400, $1,700, $1,900, $2,100, $2,400 and $2,900/year for 4 years. Coal Township also provides 5 scholarships.
Entertainment: Entertainment to be provided by the several seniors during the business meeting. Vic Boris Band will again be playing for two hours at the Afterglow.
Invitations: Newsletter is on the web and has been mailed out.
Memorabilia: Nothing to report.

Programs: Banquet Program is in progress.
Publicity: Per email from Shelia Masinos Pavelko ’74, photos are scheduled to be taken at the banquet.
Website: John Clutcher ’74 commented on the Facebook Group started last year for the alumni association. About 10 new members have been added since the newsletter was mailed a few weeks ago. Total now is 22. Web site www.indians.k12.pa.us/alumni reflects ongoing maintenance. Tony Polek ’72 requested the web site help advertise the upcoming 150th Shamokin Celebration on Saturday July 5th. This has been done (see "Other Links" for his letter on the web) as well as posting on our Facebook group page.
Old Business:
Gift cards will again be purchased for the door prizes which are given out during the evening’s festivities. These seem to be well received last year.
New Business:
The safe deposit box at the bank will be eliminated later this year, with the association purchasing a new safe that is fireproof. The purchase cost of the new safe is $299.99. Safety deposit box rental is $130/yr. Motion to accept by John Klinger ’68 and Irvin Liachowitz ’42 seconded the motion. Motion passed. The safe will be kept at the treasurer’s house.

Banquet at 5:30 PM on May 24th, 2014 at Masser’s.
